Tertiary institutions provide undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. There are three types of tertiary institution in New Zealand: 1) Public Institutes – now branded under the common name “Te Pukenga New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology” – providing applied degrees, 2) Private tertiary institutes which often provide business and IT courses as well as early childhood education, and 3) Public Universities – all New Zealand universities are ranked in the top 5% of universities worldwide according to international university rankings.
New Zealand high schools provide one of three qualification and examinations frameworks. Public schools mostly use the official NCEA, while private schools may choose to follow NCEA, CIE or IB. Students gain university entrance based on the college results of whichever qualification they complete without having to sit another university entrance exam.
